As part of the series of illustrations for the Young Carers Alliance, we created an activity booklet with the intent of helping with preparation for assessments and information-gathering for young carers in early childhood.
Formal assessment processes tend to be difficult for these little children to engage with and so this booklet is designed to provide professionals with a tool to help involve young carers in conversation. It aims to do this by engaging children’s imagination, to break the ice and help them open up and talk about their caring situations.
The booklet includes colouring activities and prompts for children to answer in words or with drawings. It aims to help primary school teachers, health care professionals, researchers, and social workers as a tool to facilitate the dialogue with young children.
We are starting to test the use of this booklet (and slight variations of it) in various settings in Kingston upon Thames. It has also been translated into Japanese and is currently being used by some organizations in Japan, like Nagosib.
Here are some of the pages, including colouring activities and prompts:
The booklet is currently being distributed alongside an exclusive sticker sheet.
I used some of the booklet's illustrations for the stickers. With bright colours and cute bunnies, the idea is that stickers help with the interactive aspect of the booklet and cue young children to interact with it and with the professionals conducting the assessment.
The whole design of the booklet - from the illustrations to the formating - have been made with young children in mind.
You can download the booklet by clicking on the download link below. We recommend printing it on an A5 size. If you have any questions on how to use the booklet or if you want to request a text-free version for translation purposes, please contact: jbangsuk@icloud.com or anaclaugraca@gmail.com
